        Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is essential in endodontics for cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system, facilitating treatment success by eliminating pathogenic microorganisms and promoting periapical health. The efficacy of NaOCl primarily depends on its concentration; however, although various commercial formulations are available, the actual concentration may deviate from the labeled value. Objectives: To evaluate the concentration of three commercial brands of 5% NaOCl available in Chile, analyze the total chlorine percentage in each product, and assess their pulp tissue dissolution capacity by measuring the required time. Materials and methods: An in vitro experimental study was conducted using pulp tissue from sixty healthy permanent teeth. The samples were divided into six groups and immersed in 5% NaOCl solutions from the brands Hertz, Prime, and Aval Clor. The concentration of NaOCl was determined by spectrophotometry, measuring total chlorine content, and the time required for pulp tissue dissolution was documented. Results: The average detected chlorine concentrations were 4.91% (Hertz), 4.70% (Aval Clor), and 4.36% (Prime). Statistical analyses using Shapiro-Wilk and Levene tests revealed significant differences (p < 0.05). Hertz exhibited the closest concentration to the labeled 5%, while Prime displayed the lowest concentration and the longest pulp dissolution time. Conclusions: The pulp tissue dissolution capacity is proportional to the concentration of NaOCl. Longer exposure times to sodium hypochlorite increase tissue dissolution. Significant differences were identified between the labeled and actual concentrations of the tested products.
        El hipoclorito de sodio (NaOCl) es fundamental en endodoncia para limpiar y desinfectar el sistema de conductos radiculares, contribuyendo al éxito del tratamiento al eliminar microorganismos patógenos y promover la salud periapical. La eficacia del NaOCl depende principalmente de la concentración y, aunque existen diversas formulaciones comerciales, la concentración real puede diferir de lo indicado en la etiqueta. Objetivo: Evaluar la concentración de tres marcas comerciales de NaOCl al 5 % disponibles en Chile, analizando el porcentaje de cloro total en cada producto y la capacidad para disolver el tejido pulpar mediante la medición del tiempo requerido. Materiales y métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio experimental in vitro para analizar la pulpa de sesenta dientes permanentes sanos. Las muestras se dividieron en seis grupos y se sumergieron en una solución de NaOCl al 5 % de las marcas Hertz, Prime y Aval Clor, y se evaluó la absorbancia del NaOCl por espectrofotometría. Resultados: Los porcentajes promedio de cloro detectados fueron: 4.91 % (Hertz), 4.70 % (Aval Clor) y 4.36 % (Prime). Las pruebas de Shapiro-Wilk y Levene revelaron diferencias significativas (p < 0.05). Hertz se acercó más al 5 %, mientras Prime mostró los valores más bajos y mayor tiempo de disolución pulpar. Conclusiones: La capacidad de disolución del tejido pulpar es proporcional a la concentración de NaOCl; un mayor tiempo de exposición al hipoclorito aumenta la disolución del tejido. Se identificó una diferencia significativa entre la concentración indicada en la etiqueta y la real.
