Sumario:Grotto temples are significant carriers of Chinese civilization, bearing the mission of perpetuating historical context and promoting the national spirit. Over the past 90 years, the China Academy of Cultural Heritage has been dedicated to the conservation and utilization of grotto temples. With the commitment of a "national team", the China Academy of Cultural Heritage has pioneered explorations and led innovations, accumulating profound technical and practical experience and forging a conservation approach that deeply integrates traditional craftsmanship with modern science and technology. During the pioneering and exploratory period (1930s–1950s), the China Academy of Cultural Heritage led the rescuing documentation of cultural relics, promoted the initial integration of traditional techniques with modern science, successfully rescued a large number of endangered grottoes, and trained the first group of professionals with both traditional skills and scientific awareness. This laid a solid foundation for establishing a subsequent scientific conservation system. In the period of systematization (1960s–1990s), the China Academy of Cultural Heritage systematically developed a grotto temple conservation system encompassing conservation philosophy, restoration materials, key technologies, management mechanisms, and scientific planning, preliminarily forming a conservation path with Chinese characteristics. This marked the transition of the China Academy of Cultural Heritage’s work from experiential exploration to preliminary scientization and systematization. In the period of innovative breakthroughs and the maturity of systematic conservation (2000–present), the China Academy of Cultural Heritage has spearheaded a series of regional and representative major conservation projects, continuing to play an exemplary and leading role as a national team. It has undertaken and completed numerous national key research projects, nationwide grotto temple resource surveys, professional talent training, and international cooperation initiatives, achieving a series of breakthroughs. It has established a scientific and practical conservation system with Chinese characteristics, propelling China’s grotto temple conservation into a new stage characterized by innovative breakthroughs and the maturity of systematic conservation. Currently, facing multiple challenges such as social development, climate change, accelerated weathering of grottoes, and growing public cultural demands, grotto temple conservation urgently requires breakthroughs in concepts, technologies, and management mechanisms. In response to the needs of the times, the China Academy of Cultural Heritage has gradually established a comprehensive innovation system integrating refined investigation, research on deterioration mechanisms, R&D of conservation materials, process optimization, monitoring and assessment, preventive conservation, talent cultivation, and project demonstration. By deepening interdisciplinary collaboration and leveraging technological empowerment, it significantly enhances the scientific and systematic level of conservation work and leads the current direction of geotechnical heritage preservation. Looking ahead, the China Academy of Cultural Heritage will continue to deepen theoretical exploration, expand international cooperation, and promote higher-quality and sustainable grotto temple conservation, providing lasting driving forces for China’s cultural heritage conservation.
石窟寺作为中华文明的重要载体, 承载着延续历史文脉与弘扬民族精神的时代使命。九十年来, 中国文化遗产 研究院深耕石窟寺保护利用, 始终以"国家队"的担当开拓探索、创新引领, 组织实施了一系列重大保护工程, 不仅 积累了深厚的技术与实践经验, 更开创了一条传统工艺与现代科技深度融合的保护路径。面对社会发展、自然气候变 化、风化加剧、文化需求增长等多重挑战, 石窟寺保护迫切需要在理念、技术与管理机制上实现创新突破。回应时代 呼唤, 文研院逐步构建起一套集精细化勘查、机理研究、保护材料研发、工艺改进优化、预防性保护、人才培养和工 程示范于一体的综合创新体系, 深化多学科交叉与科技赋能, 显著提升了保护工作的科学化、系统化水平。实践证 明, 该体系已在多项重大石窟保护工程中取得突出成效, 聚力打造了一批岩土文物保护示范案例, 为石窟寺的长期保 存与活态传承提供了坚实支撑。展望未来, 文研院将继续深化理论探索, 拓展国际合作, 推动石窟寺保护事业向更高质 量、更可持续的方向迈进, 为我国文化遗产保护事业注入持久动力。
