It starts from one premise: every economy is an economy of time, and neoliberal capitalism converts that time into raw material for accumulation, producing alienated democracies-formally existent but substantively empty. Drawing on a genealogy of value and the region's social struggles, the article proposes an epistemic shift: from money and productivity to time for the good life as the foundation of substantive democracy. The thesis is clear: it is not democracy that produces freedom-it is temporal freedom that makes democracy possible. Empirical evidence, based on Mexico using the ENCPD 2021, confirms that greater relational time availability predicts greater substantive democratic participation.
