ab: This article examines the relationship between temporal expropriation and democracy in Latin America through a critical philosophy of the political economy of time. It starts from one premise: every economy is an economy of time, and neoliberal capitalism converts that time into raw material for accumulation, producing alienated democracies-formally existent but substantively empty. Drawing on a genealogy of value and the region's social struggles, the article proposes an epistemic shift: from money and productivity to time for the good life as the foundation of substantive democracy. The thesis is clear: it is not democracy that produces freedom-it is temporal freedom that makes democracy possible. Empirical evidence, based on Mexico using the ENCPD 2021, confirms that greater relational time availability predicts greater substantive democratic participation. Without temporal justice, there is no real democracy.
