It analyzes how these elites, composed of both laypeople and clerics from the same social backgrounds, use religion to assert their power, build urban identity, and promote social consensus. The concept of "civic religion," a key historiographical term, refers to the set of religious phenomena in which civil authority plays a central role, without implying secularization, but rather a reorganization of the relationship between municipal power and spirituality. The contributions highlight the role of confraternities, local cults (such as that of Saint Martial in Limoges), and public and private pious practices as instruments of social cohesion and political legitimation. Finally, the dossier invites a reconsideration of these practices from a multiscalar perspective, going beyond the simple opposition between the religious and the political. Cet article explore la notion de « religion civique » ou spiritualité urbaine à travers l’étude des pratiques dévotionnelles des élites municipales dans les villes françaises du Moyen Âge tardif, notamment Limoges, Montpellier et Toulouse. Il analyse comment ces élites, composées de laïcs et de clercs issus des mêmes milieux, utilisent la religion pour affirmer leur pouvoir, construire l’identité urbaine et favoriser le consensus social. La « religion civique », concept historiographique clé, désigne l’ensemble des phénomènes religieux où le pouvoir civil joue un rôle central, sans pour autant signifier une laïcisation, mais plutôt une réorganisation des rapports entre pouvoir municipal et spiritualité. Les contributions mettent en lumière le rôle des confréries, des cultes locaux (comme celui de saint Martial à Limoges) et des pratiques pieuses publiques et privées comme instruments de cohésion sociale et de légitimation politique.
