Using longitudinal data from 2010 to 2018 across a variety of cities in the United States, this research analyses how neighbourhood crime and housing market changes influence each other, while accounting for differences in city size, economic conditions, and employment opportunities. The findings suggest that while increased homeownership and housing investment generally reduce crime, these effects vary depending on the broader urban contexts. In economically vibrant cities, housing investments may foster social control and cohesion, reducing crime, whereas in stagnant cities, these investments might have less impact or even exacerbate crime.
