The science lecture room and laboratory have become firmly established as fundamental equipment for both the college and the high school in the last century. The article discusses opportunities that should be kept in mind in equipping the science workroom. The first opportunity is that of assisting in the teaching of the elements of learning set forth in the elementary science course of study. This might be called the required or core content. The second opportunity is that of encouragement of individual and group interest. The workroom should be equipped in such a way as to assist in giving children such instruction as comes from a well-balanced experience with science. The author suggests three chief types of instruction, which should be evaluated in terms of the elementary school program in its relation to the science workroom. One of them is the departmentalized organization of instruction.
