| Sumario: | This article reviews "Upon a Machine" (2026), the first US solo commission by Indonesian artist trio Tromarama at The Kitchen’s temporary Westbeth space in New York. The sound and video installation explores themes of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and post-Cold War capitalism’s impact on East and Southeast Asia’s economic growth, using classroom instruments mechanized by AI and AI-generated animations referencing Disney comics and Marxist critiques. The work critiques capitalist ideologies embedded in mainstream culture and highlights the ongoing dominance of English-language programming and Silicon Valley’s influence in shaping technology and wealth. Through its multimedia presentation, the installation reflects on who controls cultural narratives and the evolving relationship between humans and machines.
