Sumario:Azacitidine (Vidaza) is commonly administered to older adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), particularly those who are ineligible for intensive chemotherapy, have relapsed, or have not responded to standard treatment regimens. Although azacitidine is delivered via a simple subcutaneous injection, patient appointment durations can range from 1 to 3 hours at the Sunnybrook Complex Malignant Hematology Outpatient Clinic. This variability is largely due to the coordination of multidisciplinary services, often resulting in extended visits for patients--many of whom attend daily appointments for 7 consecutive days (excluding weekends) each month. These patients experience extended wait times, which not only affect individual patient satisfaction and quality of life, but also contribute to workflow inefficiencies and potential delays in care for other patients. This quality improvement initiative explores strategies to streamline the administration process of azacitidine by implementing a purposeful scheduling model. Our revised approach involves pre-approval protocols and strategic grouping of patient appointments to minimize delays, improve clinic throughput, and enhance the overall patient experience. Effectiveness will be evaluated through patient and staff surveys, as well as data extracted from the appointment booking system. This project aims to demonstrate how thoughtful scheduling and process optimization can lead to measurable improvements in both patient-centred care and operational efficiency. Ultimately, by prioritizing both patient needs and clinic workflow, this quality improvement initiative emphasizes how innovation in treatment delivery can significantly improve patient satisfaction while optimizing clinic operations for long-term success.
