| Sumario: | This article focuses on the concept of learning disabilities (LD). Large numbers of children in today's world face problems in learning basic skills, such as reading, spelling, and arithmetic. The field of learning disabilities has been shaped by federal funding and parental pressures. The field of learning disability includes conditions which have been referred to as perceptual handicaps, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, developmental aphasia, etc. Experts in the field and those involved in research of LD differ on interpretation and diagnosis. A similar term "educationally handicapped" can be used as a synonym for the general learning problem area. Some experts and practitioners believe that learning disabilities can be regarded similar with the poor achievement in children of normal intelligence. As many people regarded the poor achievement of the children as the major criterion for learning disability, the number of learning disabled children increased, and the concern with neuropsychological functioning lessened.
