The author considers the nature-nurture problem, sometimes studied with particular references to specific forms of learning, in which case it becomes the problem of learning versus absolute physiological maturation. The second problem of basic importance to education is motivation. A motive is a basic determination of behavior, including school learning. It is a problem which for years has been occupying the speculative and experimental interest of psychologists. Statistics have enabled psychologists and educators to give their investigations and results a quantitative character which has provided considerable precision and valuable information not otherwise available.
