ab: This text explores the origin and meaning of the adage "en oino aletheia" ("in wine, truth") through an anthropological and phenomenological lens focused on the act of conviviality. We will attempt to understand the type of communication wine initiates, the way we come to reveal ourselves to another, and the levels (empirical, rational, or intuitive) that underpin the authenticity of such communication. We will examine the extent to which wine's "transformative power" allows not only for sincerity, but also for a certain epistemological culpability, akin to the effects of other substances, and consider whether the truth revealed is one intended for the self or for the other. Finally, this critical inquiry will also address distinctions related to generational differences or cultural particularities.
