ab: The article presents a profile of publisher Andrew Franklin, at Profile Books. Franklin has collected two Small Publisher of the Year awards since he set up Profile in 1995. He remains a fiercely independent publisher whose outspoken style tends to polarise opinion. He has publicly thanked Penguin Group for firing him in 1995; more recently, he's been vocal about his opposition to consolidation in the retail industry, and about the appalling rates of pay for graduates going into publishing. Franklin never set out to be an independent publisher. He joined the civil service when he left university and stuck it out at the British Department of Trade and Industry for two years. He says he was forced to set up Profile because no one would give him a job he wanted after he left Penguin. Profile is now happily part of Faber's independent sales alliance.
