| Sumario: | This article reports that the two products that earn Microsoft half of its annual profits, the Windows operating system and Office, a collection of personal-computer applications including word processing and spreadsheet programs, are under threat from new technologies. The competition comes from on line applications that allow computer users to call up the software they need over the Internet. Microsoft is geared to software as a physical product, purchased on discs. Online competitors charge each user a subscription or offer software for free. |
