She was an undocumented immigrant who diligently pays her taxes featured by Tulsa World reporter Ginnie Graham and was later arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Census data from 2004 put the immigrant population at nearly 34.3 million, almost double what it was in 1990. Immigrants now make up 12 percent of the population and, according to a study by the Pew Hispanic Center, an estimated 30 percent of them are in the country illegally.
