ab: The article presents the author's views on predicting sales in the publishing industry. Non-fiction publishers commissioning books to be published during 2007 and beyond are putting their money on authors who are writing about subjects that they think the public will not only want to read about in 12 to 18 months' time, but ideally that will also backlist. The author says he particularly loves going through future rights lists with foreign publishers and agents to predict what the public will be interested in 12 months from now. All the rights lists are available to every publisher at more or less the same time, and sometimes everyone goes for the same books.
