Sumario:The article presents an opinion regarding the poem "Martial" and the nature of the word play which depend on the recognition of the three cognomina that the poet referred to is bigger than its predecessor by one letter. The cognomina are Creticus, Africanus and Germanicus. Each cognomen is bigger than its predecessor by one letter. Other instances of playing upon names give some kind of twist on their meaning. A most celebrated example is that of Lucan on Pompey which stated "stat magni nominis umbra".
