Two programmed texts were used to present the written content of the experiment. The first program introduced concepts by associating them with the structures of fictional two-dimensional crystals presented as line-drawings. On the other hand, the second program contained frames requiring responses. The ideas developed were revised and applied to problems in which crystals were represented by photographs of structural models.
