Isolation and characterization of Bordetella bronchiseptica strains from canine origin.

With this aim, dogs with semiology of respiratory clinical signs or clinically healthy were sampled with hyssop impregnated of brain-heart infusion medium. Swabs were cultured on Mac Conkey agar plates and after 48 h incubation at 37°C; the supposed colonies of B. bronchiseptica were identified by motility, Gram stain, and biochemical tests. The strains were characterized by their virulence factors such as: haemolysis, haemagglutination, production of dermonecrotic toxin and the presence of pertactin. One hundred and thirty swabs were obtained during an eight months period, and 11 strains were isolated. Eleven animals displayed tract respiratory affection and six strains were isolated. None of the strains showed a clear hemolytic activity, the hemagglutination titer varied among the different strains. All but one showed dermonecrotic activity, and only four strains expressed pertactin. pubtype: Academic Journal doctype: Article src: R language: English refInfo: copyright: @attributes: flag: Y custom: Copyright of Veterinaria México is the property of Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia UNAM and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites without the copyright holder's express written permission.
