It is believed that the French Renaissance influenced the device that Ricketts designed for the firm of Osgood, McIlvaine and Co. in 1891. He used the Wechel design, which is a certain type of symbolic publisher's device used with dolphins, anchors, or trees. Ricketts's own device came out in 1891, which had its initial use on the title-page of "Intentions."
