The discovery of the asteroid Ceres by Giuseppe Piazzi led to its rediscovery by Karl Friederich Gauss via his principle of least squares. That work led to Evariste Galois's group theory. Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier's theory and P. P. Ewald's paper on radiation set the stage for Max von Laue's x-ray crystallography that enabled molecular structures to be determined and drugs to be routinely designed.
