Sumario:The authors offer opinions on economics and other social sciences research. The satirical device of an imaginary investigation of data torture is used to criticize research which uses questionable statistical analysis of information gathered in research. Statistical measures criticized include detrending, filtering and dismissing data as statistical outliers. Use of autoregression, third-degree polynomial structures and first and second differencing are also described as abuse of data. It is stated that the pressure to engage in scholarly publishing is a primary cause of ethical lapses in research.
