Sumario:The article explains the significance of design and architecture teacher Horst Willhelm Jakob Rittel to the first of design. Although he never designed a single building or practiced as an architect, Rittel changed the field of design by connecting design and politics. He offered criticism of first generation design approaches and proposed a set of principles for second generation design approaches. A list of fundamental ideas concerning design introduced by Rittel is provided. A brief summary of his career as a professor is presented.
