Sumario:The article details the structure and some background on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). FPGAs were invented by Ross Freeman, one of the founders of Xilinx in the mid-1980s. Along with Xilinx, Altera, Actel, Lattice Semiconductor, and Atmel all manufacture and sell the technology. An FPGA is defined by the author as a semiconductor made up of programmable logic elements, interconnects, and input/output blocks. The FPGA is designed to be runtime user-configurable to allow implementing complex digital circuits. More information about the structure and design of the FPGA is discussed as well as the benefits of the technology over traditional standard application-specific integrated circuits.
