Sumario:The article discusses the rise of open source, open standard software and Web applications in the workplace. Businesses are increasingly using Web applications that require a web browser instead of using software maintained on personal computers. The author believes the switch can be cost-effective for businesses as they don't have to invest in the software or continually update it. Four strategies are presented by the author for a change to open source software, from a traditional business model to changing totally to open source applications and internet support. The author also suggests using Web based applications involving a subscription or ad-revenue. The portability of Web applications is enticing to businesses, but requires internet access.
