Bickerman, a historian of Judaism in antiquity, to interpret his thesis suggesting that Hellenizing Jew reformers were responsible for the initiative for the persecution of Greek King Antiochus IV that led to the decrees that provoked the Maccabean revolt. A brief background of the historian is presented. It notes that Bickerman recognized the need to determine what might have motivated the Jews to take such steps. |
