Researchers have also found that chaotic processes may be related to dissociative phenomena, which are characterized by abrupt shifts between disconnected contents of consciousness (Bob 2003; Putnam 1997). In the self-organizing theory of dreaming, Kahn and Hobson (1993) similarly proposed that abrupt shifts in neural activity patterns during chaotic pontogeniculooccipital (PGO) bursts of neural activity are related to the discontinuous jumps between dream events. In this article, the author emphasizes common features of brain function during dissociative states and dreaming and suggests that chaotic states during dreaming relate to dissociative states emerging during dream process. This idea is in accordance with Gabel's (1989) hypothesis that dissociative states may be projected into dream scenery during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and dreams may serve as a reflection of a dissociated system.
