| Sumario: | While the 19th century publisher Charles Carrington, who had a bookstore in Paris, has been called one of the leading publishers of erotica in 19th century Europe, his range of publications includes works of classical literature, including the first English translation of Aristophanes' ‘Comedies,’ and books by such famous authors as Oscar Wilde and Anatole France. These ‘open’ works by Carrington were a way of making sure that he could also sell his ‘undercover’ erotica. Research at the Kinsey Institute has revealed that Carrington's advertising brochures were aimed at upper middle class English and American buyers who wanted limited edition books that were both intellectually respectable and risque.
