International solidarity with United States miners, who were massacred in Chicago at 1886 and the aftermath of the World War I, promoted the establishment of the eight-hour shift work in many countries. In Mexico, the 1917 Social Rights Declaration adhered to this position under the idea that the excessive workload above the 8-hour limit had negative effects on the health of workers; nevertheless, this statement seems to be sustained only by testimonies, anecdotic opinions and/or by the logic and common sense that then prevailed. For this reason, a literature review was carried out in search for the evidence supporting this apparently immovable length of the shift work. The globalization of the economy and the tendency towards flexibility and deregulation of current contractual relationships, are the new challenges that the eight-hour shift work is facing. La jornada laboral de ocho horas es uno los máximos logros obtenidos a través de la demanda organizada de los trabajadores. La solidaridad internacional con los mineros de Estados Unidos masacrados en Chicago en 1886 y los eventos posteriores a la Primera Guerra Mundial, promovieron la instauración de la jornada laboral de ocho horas en diversas partes del mundo. En México, la Declaración de Derechos Sociales en el año de 1917 resolvió apegarse a esta postura, bajo la idea de que el sobreejercicio cotidiano del trabajo por arriba de ese límite ocasionaba efectos negativos graves a las salud de los trabajadores; medida que parece haberse sustentado en testimonios, opiniones anecdóticas o en la lógica y el sentido común imperantes entonces. En razón de ello, se efectuó la revisión de algunas observaciones o experiencias que apoyan y ratifican mantener la duración de la jornada laboral tal y como se concibe hasta ahora.
