      ab: The article presents information on the advantages of internal encryption for protecting the confidentiality of stored data in computer disk drives. The author outlines some advantages of the adoption and utilization of a secure-disk architecture standard, including less design demands for implementers, reduced development costs and time to market, and increased trust levels. He explains the proposed "IEEE PI 619 Standard for Cryptographic Protection of Data on Block-Oriented Storage Devices," which calls for a transparent encryption module inserted in the data path by developers. Aspects of discryption architecture possibilities, including threat model/attack scenarios, encryption, and access control, are discussed.
