      ab: The article discusses the roles that circuits play in the technical world and advocates that they should no longer be referred to as hardware but that they be considered software. Advanced circuits that are custom-made by system designers are usually called coprocessors or accelerators but even these are made of low-level parts. The author uses field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to demonstrate that circuits are essentially software because sequences can be downloaded onto FPGAs. The impact that this change would have on the computer industry is discussed.
