| Sumario: | In this paper Octavio Paz's views concerning the relationship between modernity and progress are explored and commented upon. The notion of historical scepticism, considered crucial to an understanding of Paz's philosophical position, is introduced and explained. In addition, Paz's approach is compared to those of contemporary authors. Finally, critical commentary upon certain ambivalent aspects of the Mexican thinker's cultural criticism is offered. |
