| Summary: | This article examines the ways in which Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz's rhetorical selfrepresentations, especially in her portrait poems, coincide with and challenge two visual representations of her that accompanied volumes of her work published in Spain. Because of her unique subjectivity as a nun from colonial Mexico, who is also a prominent figure in the canon of Spanish Golden Age literature, Sor Juana has become an icon of both Hispanic and female authorship. The consideration of both the metaphorical and the visual personae of Sor Juana offers distinct approaches to the complicated issue of self-fashioning in the early modern Hispanic context.
