ab: The article reports on cultural algorithms used in research at Monte Albán, a prehistoric urban center in Oaxaca, Mexico. Cultural algorithms are used to model the use of social intelligence to solve problems in optimization, it is a class of computational models taken from the observation of cultural evolution processes in nature. Three major components are: a population space, a belief space, and a protocol that describes the first two's knowledge exchange. The data collected at the Monte Albán site was fitted into a cultural algorithm to work in conjunction with decision trees leading researches to infer patterns of social interactions at the site.
