In contrast to the exaggerated claims made by the lovers in the text, friendship is typically expressed through a mutual commiseration between characters with very little pretense. Thus, friendship effectively provides a point of reference from which to judge the novel's lovemaking, calling into question the emotional significance of the lover's plaint. At the same time, the author suggests that the representation of friendship in the Diana may reflect the emergence of a new discourse of early modern private life, as articulated in the work of Philippe Ariès (1989). From this perspective, friendship in Montemayor's pastoral novel may be understood as a historically informed literary innovation. Este artículo examina el importante papel que juega la amistad en La Diana (1559) de Jorge de Montemayor como respuesta a las hiperbólicas muestras de amor que se encuentran a lo largo de la novela. A diferencia de las exageradas declaraciones de los amantes en el texto, la amistad típicamente se caracteriza por muestras de simpatía sin pretensiones entre los personajes. Como consecuencia, la amistad proporciona un punto de referencia desde el cual se puede juzgar el amor en la novela, y así poner en tela de juicio el significado de las quejas amorosas. Al mismo tiempo, el artículo propone que la representación del amor en La Diana constituye un ejemplo del nuevo discurso de la ‘vida privada’, tal y como se la presenta en la obra de Philippe Ariès (1989).
