Summary:The article discusses the benefits and drawbacks of two high-performance reconfigurable computing architectures (HPRCs). Uniform node nonuniform systems permit vendors to provide customized solutions by modifying the ratio of reconfigurable nodes to microprocessor nodes, but also involve competition for bandwidth between the two node types. Nonuniform node uniform systems provide a uniform system level by means of employing just a single node type, but their static ratio of microprocessors to field programmable gate arrays can present economic issues for buyers and vendors. Both types of HPRC are discussed within the context of remote sensing, molecular dynamics, bioinformatics, and cryptanalysis.
