| Summary: | In Pedro Antonio de Alarcón's 'Diario de un Testigo de la Guerra de Africa' (1860), based on his experiences in Spain's 1859-60 war against Morocco and occupation of the Moroccan city of Tetuán (Tétouan), the author carried out a rhetorical conquest of Moroccan territory parallel to the military one he described. In this foundational text of Spanish Africanism, as in the progress of the Spanish expeditionary force, the apparent imposition of control over a newly mapped and renamed landscape was uneasily juxtaposed with the elusiveness of its inhabitants, a gap Alarcón attempted to bridge through intertextual appeals to historical and literary conquests of the past. |
