      ab: The article examines five large-scale computational science software projects operated at the five ASC-Alliance centers formed by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration in 1997. High-level ASC-Alliance project participants involved in project management, software architecture, or software integration were interviewed by the researchers. It was found that it is challenging to validate such a type of software due to the fact that validating the codes is a formidable challenge.
