She was born on September 27, 1871 in Sardinia and due to custom, was not allowed higher education, but compensated by becoming an avid reader of Italian and European fiction. Deledda published her first short story at the age of 15 and gradually progressed as a writer depicting the customs, myths and landscape of Sardinia. The novel "La Madre" being instrumental in her winning of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1926 is also noted. |
