Sumario:	A chapter from the book "Humanities and the Health Sciences: A Collaborative Project for Faculty Development and Curricular Revision" is presented. It introduces a series of articles on humanities and the health sciences as tackled in the Summer Institutes under the project funded by the USA National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). These NEH-sponsored institutes were held at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico beginning in June 1, 1998 and ending on July 2000.
