Summary:A chapter of the book "Studies in Honor of Denah Lida" is presented. It reviews the novel "Misericordia," by Benito Pérez Galdós who is a Spanish contemporary literature of the 19th century. According to the article, "Misericordia" pursues the peculiar logic of its dichotomies and its literary and thematic dualisms are described to be compelling. The connection between libros de leer and libros de cuenta is discussed which "Misericordia" seems to play with the distinction between the two.
