| Sumario: | This article discusses the development of mobile WiMax technology, which uses microwave signals to provide Internet access. This technology follows the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) 802.16m standard. Mobile WiMax technology is compared to Internet data transmission systems such as wi-fi and 3G cellular. The advantages of WiMax with regard to signal range and speed of data transmission are noted. The article also explores systems currently under development that will likely compete with WiMax including the long term evolution project (LTE) of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3PPP). Companies developing mobile WiMax systems including Sprint Nextel Corp. and KT Corp. are discussed. |
