Sumario:During the last 100 years or so, management education has emerged as a discipline. In India, management education started in the early 1950s and was based on the Western Model. Till 1988, India had only around 87 business schools. Presently, till the academic year 2003-04, there are 958 management institutions in India (out of which around 130 are outside the university system), which are approved by AICTE, New Delhi, with a total intake of 71,251 students per year in Master of Business Administration (MBA) and equivalent courses. Apart from the above AICTE approved programs, around 50 foreign universities are offering management programs in India, either independently or in joint ventures with Indian business schools, side by side with some Indian private universities. India is the second largest producer of MBAs in the world. Irrespective of their status, majority of the institutions are facing tremendous problems in getting and retaining talented knowledge workers, resulting in poor quality education, increasing the frustration among management graduates remaining unemployed even after huge investments in their studies. Thus, getting and retaining talented knowledge workers have become the most important issue in management education. This paper intends to understand this important issue and proposes some preventive measures for retaining talented knowledge workers.
