Sumario:The article discusses past and future developments in computer science. In 2008 computational power easily available to consumers dwarfs that of early mainframe machines. Throughout the history of computer science in the U.S. federally-sponsored research has played a major role. Computer graphics, RISC architectures, and parallel computing are among the many innovations whose government-sponsored lineage is clear. Looking ahead the Computing Community Consortium is sponsoring a variety of workshops aimed at addressing significant challenges in the field of computer science.
