The Watermill was built by Thomas Stanley in 1580. The motive power for the mill is the water filling the lake and the moat around the Hall on its island site. The structure of sandstone with a stone-flagged roof and half-timbered gables has a fine interior with post and beam framing, roof trusses and heavy bracing. A Robey portable steam engine was installed in the 1880s to help in dry periods.
