| Summary: | The article discusses the use of service-orientation architectures (SOA's) to develop dependable software systems, examining its adoption as a grid computing middleware. Challenges relating to dependability and security are analyzed with relation to needed support for service-based grid (SOG) applications and non-trivial quality-of-service guarantees. Topics include CROWN-C (China Research and Development Environment over Wide-area Networks), a SOG middleware system, the development of secure and dependable grid systems, and the architecture of middleware. The architecture and functionality of each security enhancement is also discussed.
