Summary:The article discusses future innovation in user interfaces. Smart phones and other portable devices already incorporate a variety of technologies that go well beyond the screen, mouse, and keyboard of a standard personal computer. Interfaces of the future will be unobtrusive applications able to exploit readily-available wireless access to provide such functionality as constantly-monitored self-orientation with the aid of online mapping services, the ability to locate others, and environment sensing.
