The author contends that significant events in the 1990s, including the collapse of the Soviet Union, the identification of global warming as an agent in climate change, a rise in globalization and the occurrence of epidemics, led to anxieties about the future. The author claims that such concerns are reflected in a number of science fiction novels including such books as "Oryx and Crake," by Margaret Atwood, "Never Let Me Go," by Kazuo Ishiguro and "Cloud Atlas," by David Mitchell.
