With 3548 health units and 69 hospitals the program delivers health and community interventions providing better health services to this historically underserved population. The program rests in the work developed by 269 000 volunteers including traditional healers. En general terms there were 20 million medical visits to the health units, 215 000 hospital discharges and nearly 85 000 surgeries. Preventive programs are important and evaluated through the immunization coverages, early detection of several diseases and the descending numbers of communicable diseases. The main causes of death show a mixture of infectious and chronic diseases where cardiovascular disease and diabetes are highlighted. This panorama gives a brief summary of the efforts displayed by the program and an institution that distinguishes for its level of organization and efficiency. El Programa IMSS-Oportunidades cuenta con una trayectoria de más de 28 años de servir a la población indígena y campesina en 17 204 localidades marginadas del país. Con 3548 unidades médicas rurales y 69 hospitales, el Programa realiza acciones integrales de salud donde la participación comunitaria es fundamental, y que en conjunto brindan un mejor escenario de salud para estas poblaciones. El Programa se sustenta en el trabajo de 269 mil voluntarios entre los que se cuentan parteras y médicos tradicionales. Los servicios otorgados consisten en más de 20 millones de consultas, alrededor de 215 mil egresos hospitalarios y poco más de 85 mil cirugías anuales. El impacto de los programas preventivos se destaca con las coberturas de vacunación, de detección de enfermedades y el número descendente de enfermedades transmisibles. Las principales causas de defunción muestran un patrón mixto de enfermedades infecciosas respiratorias y digestivas junto con enfermedades crónicas como las cardiacas, las hepáticas y la diabetes.
