Sumario:This article discusses the growing amount of information that is processed in the simulation and monitoring systems being developed for data-intensive computing systems in fields including genomics, electric power distribution, and climate modeling. Challenges associated with the processing of data-intensive applications and the reduction of information volumes to levels that human analysts can comprehend are noted. Strategies for organizing and operating data centers and data warehouses are addressed. The role of relational databases in ensuring the accessibility of stored information is noted.
