| Sumario: | Chapter 5 of the book "Black Women's Intellectual Traditions: Speaking Their Minds," edited by Kristin Waters and Carol B. Conaway is presented. It discusses several works of black women writers including Harriet Jacobs' "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" to determine how the ideology of true womanhood influence and shape their public voice. It is suggested that black women will continue to find ways to establish a public presence and invent ways that will allow black heroines to overcome the negative comparison with a white heroine. |
